We will be staying in Brussels for two nights at the end of our 2 week vacation. We have a flight out of Brussels at 9:55 am. Therefore, we will have to be at the airport by 7-7:30am. Is it more convenient to stay at a hotel near the airport or in downtown Brussels?

It%26#39;s up to you, but I think you don%26#39;t actually have to be at the airport for an intercontinental flight till 7.55, i.e. 2 hours before the flight. Anyway, trains leave Gare centrale for the airport at, for example, 06:52 arr. 07:08, 07:02 arr. 07:26, and 07:16 arr. 07:34, and if you were staying at a hotel like the Méridien, opposite the station (or the Ibis or Novotel a few minutes walk away), this would be perfectly convenient.
Otherwise, hotels near the airport have free shuttle buses which you could use to get to the airport not only for your flight on day of departure but also to reach the airport train (or bus if you wanted to eat around Schuman) to get into town in the evening. However, if staying near the airport, note that you might have to head out of town by around 22.00 at the latest in order to catch the last one, the Ibis%26#39;s, for example, finishes at 23.00: ibishotel.com/ibis/…fiche_hotel.shtml
The only hotel actually AT the airport is the Sheraton, which is very expensive.
