Hello. I have just returned from a fabulous trip to Ghent and we went in our own car via North Sea ferries so travel was easy. I was just wondering, before recommending it to all my friends does anyone know of a way of doing the journey via public transport? I know there is a train every hour from zeeb. to Bruge and then a train every 20 mins from there (except on a sunday) but this doesn%26#39;t seem very convient. Is there a bus service perhaps or does anyone know how much a taxi might be?
thanks

Hi Jean-s,
Nice to read that you liked your visit to Ghent so much...it%26#39;s indeed a wonderful city...
There%26#39;s a frequent bus service from the ferry terminal towards Bruges-trainstation (2 £ pro person one way). From there you can take the train towards Ghent. So it must be possible to arrive in Ghent within one hour after getting of the ferry...
Greetings !

It probably doesn%26#39;t seem very convenient to you because you aren%26#39;t used to using public transport, but it looks fine to me. It%26#39;s only 46 minutes by train from Zeebrugge-Dorp (not Zeebrugge-Strand, but there are shuttle buses) to Gent-Sint-Pieters, changing at Brugge. Actual travel times are 16 minutes from Zeebrugge to Brugge and 25 from Brugge to Ghent.
For departures on the date your friends would be likely to be arriving, they can put these station names (exactly as written) into http://www.b-rail.be/main/E/.
Otherwise, as has been said it is also possible to go by bus to Brugge and continue by train from there.
It is further from Zeebrugge to Ghent than it is from Brussels to Ghent so I wouldn%26#39;t fancy doing it by taxi myself, although it may be worth it for, say, 4 people sharing. I have seen a price of €32 each way for Zeebrugge-Brugge, from brugsetaxiservice@brugge.com, which implies to me at least double that for the journey to Ghent. You could ask for a quote from local taxi company Taxi Quick, Baron De Maerelaan 48, 8380 Zeebrugge, Tel. 050/54.44.69, Fax: 050/55.02.77 (from outside Belgium add 32 and drop the first 0).
Another possibility might be for your friends to come by Eurostar to Brussels, from where it is one hour on direct trains to Ghent.

thank you both for your replies - I am sure they will be very useful for other foot passengers using the ferrry. Everyone is bound to go to Brugge first but I think Gent is just as nice (maybe not quite as picturesque) and certainly less touristy and definitely cheaper. I just wished we could have stayed longer - but at least our short stay has given us an appetite for more.
