Brussels for a business Trip

Hi Everyone

I ve never been to Brussels and I have to go there for a work trip.. I ll be on my own (22 year old female) I am a little nervous about this but I decided I want to make a holiday out of it, by coming on the saturday.

I am going Saturday the 3rd and returning weds 7th.

I am flying straight into Brussels. I have a few questions about the city

Firstly is there a train or bus from the airport to the city centre or linking up with the metro? Does anyone have a good link to a metro map?

Secondly is it ok for a woman to eat out alone or am I best keeping a low profile in McDonolds? Will I get stared at? Or do many resteraunts have counters for people on their own. Does anyone have some good recomendations?

Thirdly What are the best sites for the 2 free days I have? Any links would be welcome.

Thanks in advance

Hi Shambam

You%26#39;ll have no problem being a 22 year old female alone in Brussels. It is a very safe city.

Firstly, there is a direct train link from Zaventum airport to Gare Centrale which costs about EUR 3,10 single. The Metro is cheap and efficient and this is the link to the map

Secondly, don%26#39;t do McDonalds! Brussels is the European capital of good food and there are so many good restaurants to choose from where you can eat alone.

Let us know whereabouts you will be staying and I%26#39;m sure Gaminari or one of the other local experts will come up with some suggestions.

Sorry, thirdly, I never seem to have much free time when in Brussels but Grand Place is always a good start or the Atomium. For me, I tend to head for a particularly good vintage car museum near Merode station!

it is pretty easy to find decent eating places where nobody will care if you are on your own. If you are worried take a book or a paper to occupy yourelf until you are comfortable.

See the grand place and atomium if you want and then a couple of the museums and waste the rest of the time eating and drinking that is a plan that has worked succesfully for me.

Believe me you will have a great time. I just returned from a long weekend in Brussels traveling with my cousin. Two gals got by just great. It%26#39;s one of the easier cities to get around in since the trourist stuff in pretty comacted. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. We took the Chunnel from London and ended up at Midi Train station. When there I did see signs for transportation to the airport. We easily caught a subway (1.50 E) for the three short stops to our fabulaou American chain Hotel. I was advised it was a less than 8 E cab ride but we were adventuresome and cheap. I was concerned that it would be a long hike from the station to the hotel, but contrare, the hotel was almost in front of us.The first thing we did was to buy a ticket on the Hop on and Hop Off bus. The entire trip pointing out all of the sites was 90 minutes. After seeing the lay of the land and what interests you, you can stay on the bus for another round and get off at will, or return another time. the tickets are for 24 hours. A great deal.

We walked almost everywhere but be prepared its a lot easier going down hill to the Grand Place where all the fun shops and restaurants are located than walking up hill. I would feel totally comfortable eating alone, especially along the main %26quot;eating street%26quot;. The food was good and relatively inexpensive compared to hotel and business men catered restuarants. The tables in the restuarants are very close to each other. Within minutes of being seated we became friends with the two local ladies doing lunch at the next table. Be prepared, it does get dark much earlier than we are used to so the darkness did sneak up on us. On Blvd. Waterloo most of the upscale fashionable shops are located. We had fun window shopping Vercache, Channel, Agnes, Christophel, Gucci, etc. etc. Have a super trip and enjoy your youth!!

Hello everyone,

I am going to spend half a day at Brussels on my business trip way. Where can I find a city tour agency near Brussels Midi?

|||

Gare du Midi is very much not a tourist area, you need to take the train one stop to Gare centrale and either take one of the hop-on, hop-off tourist buses from there (there are several companies, they all start from in front of the station) or else, if you have time for any of their organised tours, walk 5 minutes down the hill to rue de la Colline right by the Grand%26#39; Place, to De Boeck%26#39;s, see brussels-city-tours.com/engels/engframes.htm.

The street is the main entrance to the GP, opposite the entrance to the Galeries St. Hubert. You can also get there from the other side of the GP by taking an underground tram (e.g. no. 3) from Gare du Midi to Bourse, which will cost €1.50 if you buy an individual ticket from the machines in the metro station, or you can get a day ticket for €4 (or a number of other multi-trip or multi-day tickets) from the same machines, which offer English as one of the language options available.
