Eurail

Hi

from New Zealand

My wife and I in 50%26#39;s have seven week Eurail during Sept Oct 2007 over Europe and seek advice.

Cities include London Paris Dijon Milan Venice Lucerne Vienna Prague Cologne Luxembourg Brussels Frankfurt - approx 4-6 days each city.

Any hints on travel from train to hotel anywhere and other travel hints

Thanks

Check EUrail.com for your trainpass.

I am not sure if you can use this trainpass to get away from London by the eurotunnel. If not check the budgetairlines like ryanair and easyjet.

As you are in the Brussels forum, I could advise you on travel from train to hotel in Brussels if I knew which hotel you would be staying at! Assuming that your itinerary is given in order of travel, and that you will be arriving in Brussels from Luxembourg, the train will normally stop at the following stations in Brussels: Luxembourg, Schuman, Nord, Central, Midi. On the other hand leaving for Cologne, it depends on whether you are going by Thalys (for which you would have to pay a supplement on top of your Eurail pass for the seat reservation) or InterCity train. In the first case, you would leave from Gare du Midi, in the second from Nord, Central or Midi.

My advice would be to choose a hotel near Gare centrale which would also mean near the Grand%26#39; Place. There is a hotel right opposite the station, which is the Méridien, but any of the hotels in the area (many of which have %26quot;Grand%26#39; Place%26quot; in their title, e.g. Ibis, Novotel) will be within walking distance.

You cannot use your Eurail pass on either Brugge or Brussels city transport, for the latter you would need to buy individual tickets or e.g. a 3-day pass for €9; you can however use it on trains between railway stations in Brussels, e.g. Gare centrale to Gare du Midi. Your pass is valid in Belgium only for SNCB (Belgian Railways), not STIB (Brussels city transport which operates trams, buses and metro) or De Lijn (the Flemish transport company that operates buses in Brugge).

For the other cities: in London you should arrive at Waterloo International, I think the change to St. Pancras will be in November. In Paris you arrive at Gare du Nord but may not want to stay in that area, for Dijon you will leave from Gare de Lyon. In Milan I just had a recommendation of a small, plain hotel near the central station called the Amadeus. In Venice you will of course take a vaporetto (definitely not included in your Eurail pass) from Santa Lucia station, if you check your hotel%26#39;s website they usually give travel directions. I would recommend that you ask specific questions on individual country forums after doing some research on hotels yourself (which you can do on Tripadvisor using the equivalent in each forum of the %26quot;Brussels hotels%26quot; list on the left).
