We will be staying in Ostend the last week of June. If the weather is sunny, will a %26quot;dip%26quot; in the North Sea be enjoyable, warm enough to stay in for a few minutes, or is the water frigid at all times?
Is the beach just for sunbathing??

The weather in Belgium is really unpredictable, so its hard to answer your question. It%26#39;s possible that you%26#39;ll have nice, warm weather and then you can certainly swim in the sea, it can be really crowded on the weekends though. we tend to be so happy when the temperatures go up that everyone goes to the coast.. During the week, you%26#39;ll have the beach to yourself. But its also very possible that its raining or chilly in June so hard to say!

The Northsea water is never really warm. And June is still early in the season, so most probably - if the weather is nice - it%26#39;s only good to paddle a bit.

Thanks...we will be there mid-week last week in June so I will hope for warm days and cool nights!..I love the ocean and would be happy to sit and look at it for a while, but wading in would be wonderful.
I am going to see what latitude Ostend sits at and compare it with similar in USA. BK

Last year July in Belgium was virtually tropical, but I can%26#39;t remember when the heatwave started. I don%26#39;t know that it warms up the sea very much, but when the air temperature is high you would probably appreciate/tolerate relatively low water temperatures. In addition to latitude you have to take into account sea currents, for example the Algarve (S. Portugal) is much further South than Belgium but the Atlantic current there seemed to me to be even colder than the North Sea.

I did a little research and found that Ostend is about the same latitude as the state of Maine in the USA. This means that you either swim very fast or stay out of the deep end! I will be satisfied if the sun shines...besides, after some of those famous %26quot;waffles%26quot; ( I don%26#39;t recall the correct spelling for the belgian word) I might not want to put on a bathing suit. But you can%26#39;t compare the weather in Belgium to Maine even tho they%26#39;re on same latitude. The gulf stream makes a difference. The weather in Belgium as well as England, France, etc is generally quite a bit warmer than equivalent latitude in the eastern US

I%26#39;ve been in Ostende in December, when that cold wind was blowing down from the Arctic, and I was really glad I wasn%26#39;t in the sea then!

Interesting about the gulf stream and the water temperature in Portugal. I was thinking that Costa del Sol would be warmer than Italy or France because it was so much further South. I wonder what it is like in February or March.
I thought that Majorca or Southern Spain would be a good place to hide for a few weeks during the winter. I will have to check it out . Could be warm weather with cold water.
Thanks for all the help. I am looking forward to this trip to Belgium.
I cannot fit all that I want to see into two weeks and people tell me the went to the Netherlands,Belgium, and Luxembourg in 7-10 days.
Not my kind of travel. BK
