>>> Is Brugge like Venice? <<<

I was in Venice last summer and hate hate hated it. Rivers of people in every direction, all the stores selling Chinese made kitschy bobbles… couldn’t wait to leave, really sorry I went, don’t want to repeat the experience. The whole city is one big tourist trap.

I would say that even in high season Brugge never gets quite as bad as Venice. I have always taken care to go to Venice (which I love) between September and May, never June-August, although it%26#39;s a city that is rarely without visitors at all. If you really want to avoid tourists in Brugge you would have to do the same, October and November can be really nice there.

There are a few kitschy souvenir shops and the lace shop by the Béguinage gets very crowded (just don%26#39;t go in it!), but I wouldn%26#39;t qualify it as one big tourist trap.

My husband and I visited Brugge March 2006 - although it was cold, we absolutely LOVED it. I have lived in Europe and travelled all over the world - Brugge is a true gem. Certainly there are a few touristy areas and restaurants, but altogether this medieval town is glorious. Despite the freezing cold weather we found no need for transportation aside from our own feet and I would highly recommend the Huyze Hersberge B%26amp;B. The hostess, Caroline, was absolutely lovely, the B%26amp;B was a romantic dream located in a quiet and yet central location. We would have loved more time in Brugge as we only allowed for 3 days, but I would make this a stand alone destination in the future. Ask Caroline for the best chocolate shops and restaurants - she is fantastic.
