Hi,
I am coming to Brussels and have been told the Stanhope is excellent - any comments?
I would like recommendations on where to eat locally not too expensive (mid range if poss, I spent out on the hotel).
Can anyone help?

The Stanhope is near Trône metro station, which is at one end of rue du Luxembourg (an office area), at the other end you have the Place du Luxembourg with loads of cafés and restaurants at all price ranges, including an Irish pub and an American-style sports bar. My favourite in the area is the (Italian) Pasticcio in rue Marie de Bourgogne - when walking towards the European Parliament (%26quot;juke box%26quot; looking building) turn right after the Léopold hotel; it%26#39;s not open every evening, though. The Leopold itself has quite a nice restaurant in a covered courtyard, though I have only eaten lunch there; on the other hand its fancy restaurant, Les Anges, is expensive.
You can also ask directions to the Place St. Boniface, a 10-minute-or-so walk away on the way to ch. d%26#39;Ixelles. There you will find another cluster of restaurants including a nice Thai one, the IIème (Deuxième) Elément.

are reservations generally required for restaurants?
I am told that smoking in restaurants is common place, is this correct? if so are there any good non-smoking restaurants

Smoking in restaurants has been banned here since 1/1/2007. The rule does not, however, apply to bars.
If you go to the sort of areas I mentioned, there are so many restaurants that you shouldn%26#39;t need to reserve, but of course they quite like it if you do. You would have to reserve for places like Comme Chez Soi months in advance, but you won%26#39;t be going there if you are trying to save money. You can look up all restaurants in Belgium on www.resto.be, the area you will be in is - just - Ixelles (1050). The town centre is 1000.
