Visiting Belgium with 13 yr old grandson. Sophisticated diner but hates fish! Can you suggest some good restaurants in Brussels that might serve beef, lamb, bison in a dressy casual ambiance??
Also...any recommendation for a hotel in Ostend other than Thermae Palace? They do not answer my emails. BK

I have no idea where you can get bison in Brussels, but any brasserie/taverne will do things like %26quot;carbonnades flamandes%26quot; (a sort of beef stew), and you don%26#39;t have to dress up to go there - though I%26#39;m not sure exactly what you want in this respect, to me %26quot;dressy%26quot; and %26quot;casual%26quot; are opposites. A good casual place is Arcadi at the end of the Galeries St. Hubert furthest away from the Grand Place, and for %26quot;proper%26quot; restaurants, La Taverne du Passage in the main gallery and L%26#39;Ogenblick in the Galerie des Princes are good bets. I also like the ribs etc. at Au Pavé de Bruxelles on the corner of rue de l%26#39;Etuve ((the street that leads from the GP to the Manneken Pis) and rue des Brasseurs, one block from the GP.

Every restaurant in Belgium will serve some kind of meat: beef (steak), veal, pork, lamb or poultry. Even a fish restaurant will have a few meat dishes for non-fish eaters.
For a bit of a dressier experience, try Belga Queen at Wolvengracht (Rue Fossé aux Loups ). If only for the beautiful building (but the food is good, too!).
I also liked Le Café du Vaudeville (Galerie de la Reine) for lunch.

Many thanks to Gambosell and Gaminari - We are staying at the Metropole so I think one Dinner in their Cafe ( is it still well regarded?)
one in Taverne du Passage and one in Belga Queen will cover it.
Lunch at Cafe du Vaudeville seems a good choice. I think we will be in the Sablon area during the day.
Any suggestions for a day in Brugge which we will do from Ostend.
Also from Ostend we will see Ypres, Dunquerke. Planning 4 nights in Ostend - think it%26#39;s too many?
Now that I think of it the Bison was featured in the Bastogne segment ofthe trip.

I love the Metropole%26#39;s café for its décor and atmosphere but I would never have thought of it as a dinner venue, it is not and as far as I know never has been well regarded for its food - although they do a good, if expensive, croque monsieur.
In addition to the café the Métropole has a %26quot;gastronomic%26quot; restaurant called the Alban Chambon, perhaps that is what you had in mind?

Perhaps the Metropole is known for it%26#39;s atmosphere...I thought the food...well then we need another good restaurant for dinner...
what do you suggest??

There is a holiday inn garden court located close to the shopping and restaurant distict in Oostende.
I have stayed there a couple of times and can recommend the hotel.
Should you go in the summertime make sure to book the right room, since not all have AC.
It is also walking distance to the Casino and beach boulevard.
