Baggage

I am flying JFK to BRU on a Delta frequent flyer ticket and then continuing on to MXP on a purchased ticket via Brussels Airlines. Delta won%26#39;t check my bags through to MXP. Is there any way to get my bags at BRU and recheck them without going outside and re-entering through security again?

No, Brussels Airport operates in exactly the same way as any other airport: if you only have hand-baggage you can stay %26quot;airside%26quot; and check in for your next flight at the transit desks. But if you have bags to collect from one flight before checking in for another, you have to go through passport control before you can collect them, and after that you must go through customs and effectively enter Belgium before checking back in on the %26quot;landside%26quot; of the airport, with the bags that have to go in the hold. You cannot bring luggage from the carrousel back into the transit part of the airport and even without it, once you have gone through the %26quot;incoming%26quot; passport control, they wouldn%26#39;t let you back into the transit area: you have to go out into the arrival hall, up one level, and then (after checking in yourself and hold-baggage for your onward flight) enter the transit side again from the departures area, with hand luggage only.

However, even if your hold baggage WAS checked through to Malpensa, you yourself would have to go through security again with your hand baggage, albeit not from the %26quot;landside%26quot; of the airport. Belgium and Italy are both members of the Schengen zone, and you will be arriving from outside it, therefore you have to change from the non-Schengen to the Schengen part of the airport (pier B to pier A), and passport controls and security checks on hand-luggage apply in between these.
