Bruges or Brussels?

Hi

I am visiting in April (Easter weekend) for a 2 night stay. Is it better to stay in Brussels or Bruges? Hotel wise you get a lot more for your money in Brussels but I have heard that Bruges in a beautiful city.

I am looking for a relaxing weekend with my husband sampling a few of the different beers available.

Thanks in advance

Clare

|||

If you%26#39;re looking for a relaxing weekend, I%26#39;d recommend Bruges, as Brussels is quite large and the urge to see and do everything may result in not much relaxation. Bruges is beautiful, contained, you can walk from one end to the other in an hour....and there%26#39;s lots of places to sample the beers and chocolates, cakes, and more....

Hypermarket/supermarkets

I will be spending a week in Brugge next month, arriving by eurostar. I have read that there are a couple of hypermarkets on the Ghent Road.. are these accessible by public transport?

Thanks :)

|||

what public transport? I wasn%26#39;t aware of any, except for the train and the horse and cart.........

You can stock up when the market comes to town, that%26#39;s Wed and Sunday mornings.

Where;s the beef?

Visiting Belgium with 13 yr old grandson. Sophisticated diner but hates fish! Can you suggest some good restaurants in Brussels that might serve beef, lamb, bison in a dressy casual ambiance??

Also...any recommendation for a hotel in Ostend other than Thermae Palace? They do not answer my emails. BK

|||

I have no idea where you can get bison in Brussels, but any brasserie/taverne will do things like %26quot;carbonnades flamandes%26quot; (a sort of beef stew), and you don%26#39;t have to dress up to go there - though I%26#39;m not sure exactly what you want in this respect, to me %26quot;dressy%26quot; and %26quot;casual%26quot; are opposites. A good casual place is Arcadi at the end of the Galeries St. Hubert furthest away from the Grand Place, and for %26quot;proper%26quot; restaurants, La Taverne du Passage in the main gallery and L%26#39;Ogenblick in the Galerie des Princes are good bets. I also like the ribs etc. at Au Pavé de Bruxelles on the corner of rue de l%26#39;Etuve ((the street that leads from the GP to the Manneken Pis) and rue des Brasseurs, one block from the GP.

|||

Every restaurant in Belgium will serve some kind of meat: beef (steak), veal, pork, lamb or poultry. Even a fish restaurant will have a few meat dishes for non-fish eaters.

For a bit of a dressier experience, try Belga Queen at Wolvengracht (Rue Fossé aux Loups ). If only for the beautiful building (but the food is good, too!).

I also liked Le Café du Vaudeville (Galerie de la Reine) for lunch.

|||

Many thanks to Gambosell and Gaminari - We are staying at the Metropole so I think one Dinner in their Cafe ( is it still well regarded?)

one in Taverne du Passage and one in Belga Queen will cover it.

Lunch at Cafe du Vaudeville seems a good choice. I think we will be in the Sablon area during the day.

Any suggestions for a day in Brugge which we will do from Ostend.

Also from Ostend we will see Ypres, Dunquerke. Planning 4 nights in Ostend - think it%26#39;s too many?

Now that I think of it the Bison was featured in the Bastogne segment ofthe trip.

|||

I love the Metropole%26#39;s café for its décor and atmosphere but I would never have thought of it as a dinner venue, it is not and as far as I know never has been well regarded for its food - although they do a good, if expensive, croque monsieur.

In addition to the café the Métropole has a %26quot;gastronomic%26quot; restaurant called the Alban Chambon, perhaps that is what you had in mind?

|||

Perhaps the Metropole is known for it%26#39;s atmosphere...I thought the food...well then we need another good restaurant for dinner...

what do you suggest??

|||

There is a holiday inn garden court located close to the shopping and restaurant distict in Oostende.

I have stayed there a couple of times and can recommend the hotel.

Should you go in the summertime make sure to book the right room, since not all have AC.

It is also walking distance to the Casino and beach boulevard.

40th anniversary

I am going top celebrate my 40 years birthday. We will be around 25 guests, most of them flynig in from Norway. I`m searching for one out of two alternatives.

1) A good restaurant in Brussels where we can eat drink dance and have lot of fun. it need to stay open until 2.00 - 2-30.

2) A good small hotel with aound 13 rooms, a good restaurant and possibility of dancing having fun. This alternative can be anywhere in Belgium.

Can anyone help me? 21. april is the date. so I`m a little bit in hurry ))

Morten

|||

Hi,

I think one reason no one responded to your query is that what you are looking for doesn%26#39;t exist that I know of.

You can find a good restaurant to eat in but not to eat and dance in. Dancing is pretty much restricted to the clubs. The only place I can think of that ever had this was Jeux d%26#39;Hiver but I don%26#39;t know if they are still doing dining and dancing, you can try contacting them via email:

Chemin du croquet 1

1000 Bruxelles

Tel: +32 2 649 08 64

Fax: +32 2 649 51 01

E-mail: info@jeuxdhiver.be

There is a place called Bazaar that has dining and dancing but I have never been there and can%26#39;t recommend it. The phone number is 02 511 2600. Other clubs are Fuse, Mirano, Sonik and the Parc Savoy. These are all dancing only and get started around 11 PM.

I recommend you pick a restaurant for the meal (Cospaia or Belga Queen are good spots) then go to the clubs.

How to spend a week in Amsterdam and Belgium

Hi, I am planning a vacation in early March to spend 7-8 nights in Amsterdam/ brugge/ brussels or some combination of these. I am looking for planning advice on how much time to spend in each place. Also, should we spend a few nights in both Brugge and Brussels or just day trip from one to the other? Thanks for any advice!

|||

I really can%26#39;t tell you what your preferences should be, you can see for yourself what there is to do in these 3 places under %26quot;Brussels attractions%26quot; (list on the left when you are in the Brussels forum), %26quot;Brugge attractions%26quot; (ditto in the Brugge forum) and %26quot;Amsterdam attractions%26quot;, and work out how many days this means you would need in each.

However, I can advise you that the train takes 3 1/2 hours from Amsterdam Centraal to Brugge, via Antwerpen-Berchem, 3 hours between Amsterdam and Brussels, and 1 hour between Brugge and Brussels, or vice-versa, of course. As you would see from previous questions, if you looked, it is generally recommended to take the InterCity train rather than Thalys between Amsterdam and Brussels/Brugge, as it is cheaper and just as fast, and in the case of arrival in Brussels it gives you the choice of stopping at the South, Central or North stations, whereas Thalys terminates at the South Station. The closest station to the Grand%26#39; Place is the Central one, just 5 minutes away. You can leave from/arrive at any of these 3 stations for/from Brugge, and the cost is about €23 return, €12 at weekends.

In general it would be easier for you to minimise hotel changes, so you could base yourself in Brugge and visit Brussels by day trip, but if you are leaving from Brussels Airport and if your flight is at or before about 10 in the morning, you might in any case want to stay in Brussels the night before (also if you were arriving late at night - you don%26#39;t mention whether you are flying into Amsterdam or Brussels and whether you are leaving from the other city or have to return to the one you arrived at)..

|||

thanks for the advice. We don%26#39;t have our airline ticket yet as we weren%26#39;t sure how to divide our time. We were thinking into Brussels and out of amsterdam. We are jus beginning to do the research, and looking for input. thanks again.

|||

Hi ambaker,

I have found Amsterdam really interesting for the museums and would spend at least two days there to see the Van Gogh, the Rijks museum, Ann Frank House and the city. Brussels is a good base point for Brugge, Gent, Antwerp and of course Brussels. Brugge, Gent and Antwerp are all worth a day and are all within an hour (more or less) from Brussels by train.

When in Antwerp be sure to see the Peter Paul Ruebens house/musuem. In Gent, you want to go to the old city and check out the castle. The Brugge old city is one of the best preserved Midevil time cities in Europe.

|||

Hello, back from Europe just days ago. We spent 3 nights in Brussels and 2 in Amsterdam. So the verdict.

In Brussels you must visit Grand Place, wander through the chocolate museum and taste some, see the pis manequin, admire the gorgeous lace, have lunch(waffle) and a belgium beer at a beer Garden....wander downtown to Louise Avenue for some serious designer shopping... for dinner try Brochure Avenue and have Mussels and Chips...........Next day try the hop on off Bus but stay on for the round trip....check out the atomic building and some grand old architecture.......then decide what things you really want to see %26amp; get off at those stops. That night have a peak at the red light district it has to be seen to be believed at least once. A trip to Ghent and Brugge is great. We may have prefered to stay at Brugge, one night would have been lovely as it is a beautiful city with the narrow cobbled streets, wonderful waterways and willows, little tourist shops, and historic tourist sights ........ it certainly has a much nicer %26quot;feel%26quot; than Brussels. It was our fav city in Belgium.

We loved Amsterdam and would have liked an extra night. We loved the way people on bikes rule! We have seen nothing like it. Things to do - a canal cruise, visit the Van gogh museum, the Rijk Museum, the lovely tulip market, buy some of those tiny porcelian clogs, have some apple cake at the American Cafe, Visit Anne Franks House and go in if you like, Dinner try Europes only floating restaurant The Sea Palace has the most amazing Chinese Buffet then check out the red light district- incredible. Plus the city takes on a whole new feel at night with the canals, trees and buildings all lit up beautifully. Try to catch a Ballet or Opera /show at the main theatre - well worth it if you have time. As we were there at Christmas time The Nutcracker Ballet was on - Absolutely fabulous. Don%26#39;t worry about Rembrants Museum they are all at the Rijk. If you are into beer try the Heinnekin beer museum. So why did we want the extra day - 30 mins by train outside of Amsterdam are the beautiful tulip farms and the windmills.....Next piece of advice both of these cities have a terrible reputation for pick pockets so be very careful. We came in by Rail to both Brussels and Amsterdam so we chose central hotels close to the station. All the streets are cobbled so wear comfortable shoes. One of those compact light weight travel umbrellas are a must. Good luck and enjoy your holiday. Cheers!

|||

Thank you so much for your wonderful response. We will take it all into consideration. We have decided to stay in Brugge. I have heard wonderful things about it, and your comments confirm this. At this time, we are planning 3 nights each in Brugges (day trip to Brussels), 3 nights in Paris and 3 nights in Amsterdam.

Thanks again for all of your thoughts, It sounds as if you had a wonderful trip. Do they grow tulips this time of year? I am guessing so if you recommend the tulip farms.

|||

We were in Amsterdam late December and yes the bulbs were all in bloom there were thousands of them, all colours and types. They lined the whole side of one canal. As to when they actually bloom I haven%26#39;t a clue. My sister was there in May and she saw them too.

So the answer to your question is I don%26#39;t know.

A couple of days in Paris will be lovely! We had 7 days and I would have loved longer. There is so much to see. We stayed in the Latin quarter at a Hotel on Rue Monge and could see the Notre Dame from our Window. Suggest you book a tour for the EiffelTower or you will spend hours in the ticket line and lose one of your days waiting. Good Luck with your planning.

Where is Ostend Town?

I cannot determine where the town with restaurants %26amp; shopping is.

I am trying to pick a hotel near the sea within walking distance of restaurants etc. I cannot tell whether the Marina area near Hotel Ter Kade is a desireable spot or the Area near the Casino - Best Western Imperial etc. Looking for a safe lively location with a breeze.

We are traveling with a teenager.

Any help appreciated. BK

|||

The heart of Ostende is between the Casino (Kursaal) and Wapenplein, see www.oostende.net/hotels/georgeV/index.html

The Marina area is to the East of the centre, see hotels-belgie.be/belgium/hotels/hotel_uk.php… (click on %26quot;show map%26quot; and then if you click West, Wapenplein will come into view so you can see it isn%26#39;t all that far away).

amsterdam to antwerp

hi

im thinking of taking a day trip to antwerp when visiting amsterdam in february. how much is a day return ticket on the train from amsterdam centrall?

what are the must see%26#39;s in such a short time there?

thanks in advance!

|||

Price depends on whether you travel on weekdays or on weekends. You can look it up in the intenational section of the Dutch Railways website www.ns.nl

FYI on weekdays the full fare is 57.60 euro return on the Intercity train (you don%26#39;t need to take the Thalys train because it doesn%26#39;t stop in Antwerp Central but only in Antwerp Berchem).

For must sees, please check the information pages on TA or look in previous posts. I have written lots of suggestions in the course of last year.

Need advice for Belguim trip March 13-18

Hi everyone,

Please, I need some tips to plan my lone long weekend in Belgium, arriving Mar 13 at 10 pm.

1. What will the weather be like?

2. I plan to spend some time in Brussels, also in Brugge, maybe 2 days each. What other cities or places are worth visiting? Antwerp?

3. How far is Luxembourg from Brussels? Is it possible to make a one day trip? Maybe Waterloo?

4. I%26#39;d appreciate any advice on best tickets fares and how to save on trains, etc. to those places.

I really hope someone can help me. Thank you so much.

|||

1. Your guess is as good as ours, but you can find averages on here www.weatherforecastmap.com/belgium/brussels/

2. It depends on how much time you have and what you want to see, if you only have 4 days I would say that Brussels and Brugge are enough for this time of year, but check out %26quot;Belgium attractions%26quot; in the list on the left.

3. It is just possible to do Luxembourg in a day, it takes 2h51 minutes by train and there is one at 45 minutes past each hour from the Gare du Nord (also stops at other Brussels stations but you don%26#39;t say which would be the most convenient to where you are staying).

For Waterloo, you would take TEC bus W (or a couple of De Lijn buses whose numbers I%26#39;ve forgotten) from outside Brussels Gare du Midi, in Avenue Fonsny in front of the Hotel Ibis. I think it costs about 3 EUR one way, but it might be worth asking for a day ticket as I think this may cost 5 EUR, saving you 1 EUR on a return ticket. For the battlefield you need to get off AFTER Waterloo village, in Mont St. Jean - ask the driver to let you off at %26quot;butte de lion%26quot; (lion mount). You might also want to stop at the Wellington Museum in Waterloo on the way there or back, it%26#39;s right opposite the bus stop (and a church).

4. Train fare fom Brussels to Brugge is about €13.60 one-way, and half-price at weekends for a return ticket, so this would be the price for a return ticket at the weekend. All RETURN rail tickets are half price at weekends within Belgium, but I don%26#39;t think this would apply to Luxembourg, which costs something like €28 one way. The guys in the railway ticket offices are very good at finding you the best value ticket for the time you want to travel.

|||

Thank you for the tips,

How about rail tickets - is it necessary to book in advance or they are available and easy to buy right before leaving?

|||

For train tickets, with the exception of Eurostar (London) and Thalys (Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne..) you just turn up and buy them on the spot, or if you are afraid of a delay before departure, you can call by a convenient station and buy them the night before provided you specify date of travel. It isn%26#39;t possible to reserve a seat on local trains anyway, and they don%26#39;t stop selling when they reach capacity, if the train was full you would just have to stand (has happened to me only once, going to Ghent).

For TEC bus tickets (Waterloo) you buy them on the bus.

Note that if you are buying tickets for the Brussels transport system, STIB, from next month these will cost more if bought on the bus or tram (€2 per ticket instead of €1.50) than if purchased beforehand. You can buy single-trip tickets, multi-trip tickets, 1-day/3-day etc. tickets from the machines in metro stations, which have instructions in English as well as French, Dutch and German.

|||

Great, thank you so much for the detailed info.

Hours of Light - Late March Early April

Can any locals comment on the total hours of daily light during late March and early April?

|||

You can see current sunrise and sunset times on here, and they are lengthening by a few minutes every day www.bbc.co.uk/weather/5day.shtml?world=0037. Bear in mind that on the last Sunday in March the clocks go forward by one hour.

|||

March 31: sunrise at 7.21 am ; sunset at 8.12 pm.

|||

Thanks for the info. Some other forum claimed only 4-5 hours of daylight which sounded too odd to be true.

|||

I wonder if you aren%26#39;t confusing daylight and sunshine? It would not surprise me if there weren%26#39;t that many hours of sunshine in March/April, because Belgium is frequently cloudy. Of course, that doesn%26#39;t mean it is dark, necessarily!!

Brussels, Bruges or both?

I am trying to plan my honeymoon in Europe. We really want to go to Belgium and are trying to decide which city or cities to go to. Is one more beautiful than the other or are they both worth the stop?

Also, what is a good amount of time to stay in each city? We do not want to short change ourselves. We will be going to Paris and the Swiss Alps as well.

|||

In my humble opinion, Brussels and Brugge are both worth a stop. Depending on how much time you have, visiting Brussels for a half to a full day is sufficient. The historic center of Brussels is worth a visit and there are a few sights beyond the core, but I have heard and read that beyond that there is not much else to see in Brussels. Staying in Brugge is a treat and I would suggest at least two nights with one full day. Brugge is picturesque, well-preserved, and very charming! For example, on a recent trip we visited Brussels for the day, took the train in the late afternoon to Brugge (approx. 1 hr.) stayed the night, toured Brugge for a full day, stayed a second night in Brugge and departed the next morning. We would have loved to stay in Brugge one more day as it was very lovely, but that was all the time we had. May I suggest, if possible, to stay at Number 11 Bed and Breakfast or the Goosehouse in Brugge. Both accommodations are owned by the same person and they are absolutely outstanding! Considering it is your honeymoon, these accommodations in Brugge may be a wonderful addition! I hope this helps! Good luck and enjoy!

Travel into Europe from the US...

Hello,

My sister and I are traveling to Europe this summer. Is one European city cheaper to fly into than another??

I guess I should say, we can leave from Memphis, TN, or airports 100 or so miles away! Even Tampa, ST. Pete, or Orlando, FL where my sister lives. One of us will have to travel to the others state to fly together to Europe....my sister will not have it any other way! I lost her once in Amsterdam and she just about had a nervous breakdown before I found her!

Anyway, we want to fly to some European city preferably Eastern. From there we want to rent a car, make a bee-line for the Netherlands for a couple of days (beach area), then into the wild blue yonder in search of places we have not been for about 10 days. No hotels, no set game plan, just drive and see. This is how we travel. Just that the airfare is killing us!!

We do not mind stopping once to change planes, etc. We always try to leave in the middle of the week and come back about 10-12 days later.

Have passports, will travel is out motto....

Thanks, any advice is appreciated!

O

|||

You have to ask this question in the States, if it were the other way around I could only identify Orlando as a destination for cheap flights from Europe but Brussels Airport%26#39;s website shows no scheduled flights there, so these are only charter flights for package tours and I doubt that you can get on those coming the other way. As you want to start your trip in the Netherlands I would advise you to start by looking for flights to Amsterdam Schiphol, e.g. on www.skyscanner.com, and probably from major INTERNATIONAL U.S. airports like Atlanta, Washington, JFK, Newark, Miami, to which I am sure you can find connecting flights from Memphis and Orlando, or wherever.

You can fly to Brussels from Atlanta with United Airlines, American Airlines, SN Brussels (Brussels Airlines from March 25th) and Delta, via JFK and with Continental via Newark.

I also don%26#39;t know why people who don%26#39;t want to do the research themselves don%26#39;t seem to consider asking a travel agent!!

Brussels to Antwerp

Hello... I found the airport ANR but what airlines? Ran several searches for flights but come up with 0.

From Brussels what is the best way to get to Antwerp.

Thanks.

|||

Sorry.. I should have ran a more extensive search on these boards. Found the web site with all the bus info.

Anyone looking for bus info from Brussels to Antwerp:

www.flysn.be

|||

Click on Flight timetables for schedule http://www.antwerpairport.be/en/index.html.

For VLM schedule see http://www.flyvlm.com/emc.asp

The best way to get to Antwerp from Brussels Airport is by the shuttle bus that runs between the two, which costs 8 EUR, see flysn.be/nl_be/…shuttle-service.aspx.

Alternatively you can take the airport train into Brussels, get off at Bruxelles Nord (the first station it calls at) and change there for Antwerpen-Centraal, the total journey takes between 57 mins and 1h18 depending on exact time of travel, which dictates connections.

The best way to get to Antwerp from Brussels itself is by train which takes about 40 minutes from the Gare du Nord, a few minutes more from Gare du Midi (starting point) or Gare centrale. Cost is 6.70 EUR single, half-price at weekends.

|||

Thank you. Very much appreciated.

|||

i agree on the train - very easy to navigate and quite swift. I visited my daughter who lives in Antwerp and we both drove and took the train. train is much easier!

Commuting Paris Brussels

Hi,

I live in Paris with my partner and have found a job in Brussels.

Does anyone know the best options for commuting from Paris to Brussels?

Thanks,

P

|||

In my opinion, there is only one reasonable option for commuting from Paris to Brussels and that is with Thalys, which takes under 1 1/2 hours from Paris-Nord to Bruxelles-Midi. As you will be buying your ticket from French Railways (SNCF), you will need to ask in France how much this will cost you, I am in Brussels and the cost the other way around may not be the same.

Of course if you won%26#39;t be working near the Gare du Midi you will also need to factor in another train, tram, bus or metro, as regards both time and money. STIB fares are going up next month: if you would be working 5 days a week in Brussels you can get a 10-trip ticket for €10.50, which I believe is going up to €12.00, or monthly/annual %26quot;abonnements%26quot; (like your carte orange) for €38/380 respectively, I don%26#39;t know what these are going up to.

I don%26#39;t think anyone you need the advice of anyone with specific experience of Brussels/Belgium to decide whether commuting by car would be a reasonable option for you, if you have a car in the first place it would be up to you to calculate the cost for the distance from wherever you are in Paris to wherever you would be going in Brussels, and find out whether your office has parking facilities.

|||

Yes, but driving from Paris to Brussels will take at least 3 hours one way (under optimal conditions, no traffic jam).

In my opinion the only way would be Thalys, and it will cost your partner most of his salary.

|||

Thalys rain is a good and fast way. Tickets may be cost a little expensive whoever I think that there are offers for those who commute often for business. You could check this out at Thalys website: thalys.com

|||

A daily commute from Paris to Brussels is not an option in my view.

As stated above, the train ride is more than an hour and a half in ideal circumstances, meaning if you live close to the Paris Thalys station and work close to the Brussels Thalys station.

Your one way commute will probably be more like 2 hrs or more at best. Plus for the cost of your train rides, you may be able to at least partially find a place to say in Brussels.

Once again, just my view on this issue

Floris Avenue Hotel and safety issue

Hello all TAs:

I am going to Brussels during the mid- Feb by myself and will stay at Floris avenue hotel. After searching the forum, it seems that I have made a wrong chocie of hotel as it is so close to Gare Midi area that is supposed to be %26quot;rough%26quot;. Should I take taxi from the city centre to hotel during the evening (around 8pm)? Has anyone stay this hotel and encountered any safety problems? I am a bit worried now. Btw, how do I transfer from Gare Midi to this hotel?

Thank you so much for the help!

Cherry

|||

Hi,

In the reviews for this hotel, the most recent poster did not find the area scary at all (though they were not out and about past 10 PM). A cab trip from Gare du Midi is about 7 euros. If you have a lot of luggage, take a cab from the train station. You could walk it but at 8PM in February it could be cold and rainy.

The area is a bit rough but usually safe as long as you take proper precautions. Walk with a purpose, do not hand out any coins to beggars, do not stop if a child comes up to you asking you something (a common gypsy trick). You will be fine.

You can always use the metro from Lemmonier station to get in and out of the city center ( Toison D%26#39;Or/Avenue Louise for shopping, Gare Central for seeing the Grand Place). You can also walk to the Grand Place.

|||

Thank you so much for your help lofa. I will take a common sense for travelling by myself. Just wonder do I have to book a place just for lunch at Michelin rated restuarant in Brussels?

Again, thank you so much for your help!

Cherry

|||

For dinner some Michelin rated restaurants are booked up months in advance, and while it might not be quite as hard to get a table for lunch, you will still need to book, yes.

first time in brussels

We are are staying in Brussels 2/24 thru 2/28. Any advice on great hotel w/charm. Am considering the Metropole. Should we take a day trip to Brugge and/or Paris? What is our best option for Sunday as many things are closed. Any reccommendations on great souviners or buys to remember our trip?

|||

The Metropole has a very nice lobby (I don%26#39;t know about the rooms) and it is located within walking distance of the Grand Place but the nieghborhood is not that charming. The Jolly Du Grand Sablon is in a much more charming neighborhood which would be my preference.

You can easily do a day trip to Brugge, Antwerp and Gent which are all worth a visit. Each place can be traveled to in an hour or less by train. In Antwerp check out the Peter Paul Ruebens museum. You can go to Paris via the Gare du Midi on Thalys. You do need to reserve your seats in advance (which you can do online or at the station or via a travel agent). It takes about 1 hour 50 minutes to get to Paris. With so little time, it might be better to go there on another trip.

Sunday most small shops and restaurants around the tourist areas will be open as well as the museums. Over by the Place du Grand Sablon there are the Royal Museums of Fine and Modern Art as well as the Musical Instrument Museum.

Belgium is famous for their Beers, Chocolate, Lace (buy this in Brugge), waffels and french fries. For great chocolate try Pierre Marcolini (again there is on at the Grand Sablon) for beer you can go anywhere though if you want to brave the smoke and the college crowds, Delirium bar off the Rue des Bouchers (near the Grand Place) has over 1,000 beers to choose from. The best fries are at Maison Antoine on Place Jourdan (open all night). For waffels, there are two types to try the Brussels waffel which should be eaten in a dessert shop , these are similar to what Americans call Belgian waffels with the whipped cream and strawberries. I prefer the Liege style which can be picked up from one of the many vendors and eaten while you walk. Just make sure you are geting a freshly made waffel and that it is warm. They are infused with sugar so they don%26#39;t need any topping.

|||

I think you will have to look at the reviews under %26quot;Brussels hotels%26quot; but a friend of mine who stayed at the Metropole said the bedrooms were not up to the standard of the public rooms, although there might of course be different levels. I like the Astoria (formerly the Waldorf Astoria, now a Sofitel) myself, but I haven%26#39;t seen the bedrooms and the Métropole is more centrally located.

Museums are open on Sundays, closed on Mondays, as are shops in the Sablon and Marolles area, up and down rue Haute and rue Blaes (so between the antiques market in the Sablon and the flea market at Place du Jeu de Balles).

Brugge is one hour away by the fastest trains which are those to coastal towns like De Panne, Ostende and Blankenberghe, of which there are several every hour. You can catch these at Gare du Midi, Gare centrale or Gare du Nord and the cost is around €12/13 one way, double that for a return ticket except on Saturday and Sunday, when you can get a return ticket for the price of a weekday single.

For Paris the Thalys only leaves from Gare du Midi and being a high-speed train it doesn%26#39;t take much longer than to Brugge as it%26#39;s only 1h22 mins, e.g. on Monday 26/2: dep. 7h43, arr. 09.05 and then the last train back would be 21:55 arr. 23:17. Cheapest return fare is likely to be around €80 booked in advance on http://www.thalys.com/be/en/. The hop-on, hop-off tourist buses (www.parisvisite.com/en/Carte_Bus_Opentour.php) don%26#39;t pass by the Gare du Nord so you would have to take the metro to somewhere like Opéra to take these. Or, you can take a coach tour from Brussels, see brussels-city-tours.com/engels/engframes.htm.

Zeebrugge to Bruges

What options do I have after coming off the ferry at Zeebrugge to get to the centre of Bruges?

|||

A bus meets each ferry and takes you to Brugge railway station, from there it%26#39;s a short walk to the town centre or there are local buses.

www.aferry.to/Zeebrugge-ferry-belgium.htm

|||

or you can take a taxi from the station, cost about E9.....

La Meridien to "Tour & Taxi"

Hi

I%26#39;m surprising my wife with a weekend to Brussels to see a horse show (Cavalia) that is goig to be held at a place called %26quot;Tour %26amp; Taxi%26quot;.

Can someone tell me the esiest way to get there (on a saturday) from La Meridien. We wont have a car.

Thanks

|||

I was also wondering what We can expect the weather to be like around the end of March.

|||

%26quot;Tour et Taxis%26quot; (the French version of the name of the family Thurn und Tassis that had the first postal monopoly) is near the Port of Brussels on the other side of the canal from the North Station. Personally I would take metro line 1A from Gare centrale - which is right opposite your hotel - to Belgica (direction Roi Baudouin) and walk from there, but you could also:

- taking metro line 1 in the opposite direction and changing at Arts Loi, take metro line 2 to the Yser or Ribaoucourt stop, and walk from there;

- take a train from Gare centrale, opposite the Méridien hotel, to Gare du Nord and bus no. 14 from there (or walk); I think this is the only bus that stops right outside).

- take the metro from Gare centrale to Comte de Flandre and then bus 89 to the Picard stop, see …irisnet.be/TimeTables/…H0891F.htm (and at the bottom of that page, plan réseau means network map.

Your guess is as good as mine as to what the weather will be doing, it could be much the same as in Denmark.

|||

Sorry about the late reply but I%26#39;ve been pretty swamped at work lately!

Thanks for the directions and the link to the time table. Shortly after posting the origional question I found %26quot;Tour %26amp; Taxis%26quot; website and they also had really good directions with average walking time from the various stops.

It%26#39;s here, should anyone else need it: http://www.tourtaxis.com/

Thanks again

Bruges to Paris

Planning our trip around Belgium, France and Switzerland.

This is what we are thinking...

Arrive in Brussels and take train to Bruges.

Bruges to Paris.

Paris to Switzerland

Switzerland to Brussels.

Taking the train seems to be the most convienant. I know the train ride from Brussels to Bruges in about an hour.

How easy is it to get from Bruges to Paris?

|||

As easy as it is to get from Paris to Brugge!! See tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g188671-i448-k9759…

The easiest way is to return to Brussels and take the Thalys from Gare du Midi, which takes 1h22 minutes to Paris Gare du Nord. For prices for your date of travel see www.thalys.com.

It is apparently cheaper to go via Lille, but this will require changing in Kortrijk as well as (at some times) between Lille-Flandres and Lille-Europe stations, which could be a consideration if you have a lot of luggage.

Assuming that you are arriving at Brussels Airport, for your trip to Brugge you would take the train from below the airport to Bruxelles-Nord (which carries on to the gare centrale and gare du Midi) and change there for Brugge. The trains to Oostende, De Panne or Blankenberghe, of which there are several every hour, take an hour to Brugge stopping on the way at Gent, but there are also slower commuter trains, some of which take twice as long because they stop everywhere.

For your return to Brussels from Switzerland, if you want to do it by train Basel is on the line that goes through Strasbourg and Luxembourg to Brussels

Palace Hotel Poperinge

Has anyone stayed in this hotel?

Can you recommend it?

We are CAMRA members so can get a discount but it seems really cheap so I%26#39;m wondering if it%26#39;s too good to be true???

Any information would be welcome.

Thanks

Go. Go. Go. Book as fast as you can. My father and I stayed there recently and its a lovely place. Guy and Beatrix, the couple who run it, are really friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean and comfortable (one warning - there%26#39;s no lift so you may want a room on the first floor if you%26#39;re a bit out of shape!). The breakfast is a buffet-style affair - cereals, cold meats, several different kinds of breads, loads of jams, Nutella etc as well as tea, coffee and juice. The restaurant is excellent and good value - I recommend the Kabeljauw an der Schreve (cod in a beer/cream sauce) and the beef is supposed to be excellent. The hotel bar is a lovely old-fashioned wooden affair with many beer/brewery signs on the walls and a couple of Chouffe gnomes overseeing everything and there%26#39;s a list of 100 beers or so.

One other warning - both bar and restaurant are shut on a Sunday night.

Re parking - its best to park on the Grote Markt (but beware Fridays as its market day that day) and walk from there - its about a 3 minute walk. Poperinge%26#39;s one-way system takes a bit of getting used to as well.

Not many restaurants/bars are open on Sunday or Monday - I recommend the Amfora hotel%26#39;s restaurant on the Grote Markt (a tad pricey but excellent grub - but do take a Dutch phrasebook as they don%26#39;t have an English menu) which has another lovely bar. The Cafe de la Paix on Grote Markt is good value, with a good selection of beers, although service can be a bit slow. The Poussecafe is just further up Ieperstraat on the other side of the hotel and is good for lunch/afternoon tea (plus they sell the Westvleteren beers). The Pallietekerke, further down Ieperstraat towards the station, is another good beer bar.

If you want any recommendations about beery activities in the area then I will be happy to point you in the right direction (or alternatively you could get hold of Simon van Tromp%26#39;s Beer Traveller in West Flanders - often available on bookstalls at CAMRA beer festivals or e-mail info@beertraveller.com.

Thanks for the swift reply.

We have sent an email requesting a reservation and waiting to hear back.

Any other comments welcome.

Okaaaayyy, places round Poperinge worth visiting;

Firstly of course there%26#39;s Ypres just down the road with its Cloth Hall, Menin Gate etc - a really lovely old Flemish town. Its park is very nice too. Bar recommendations: Ter Posterie on Rijselstraat, south of the Grote Markt - 250 beers, also T%26#39;Kleine Rijsel, which is the bar to the Ramparts Museum down the bottom of Rijselstraat by the town walls. (If you%26#39;re there for the Last Post at 8 in the evening, be warned that it gets very crowded and there%26#39;s loads of disrespectful assholes with video cameras and mobile phones going off). And if you%26#39;re into that kind of thing there%26#39;s Sanctuary Wood and all the various WW1 cemeteries.

As beer buffs I assume you already know about the Abdij St-Sixtus with its three wonderful beers - ask for a map from the tourist office as its a b*stard to find - the drive-in shop is open Monday-Thursday and Saturday 10-12 and 2-5. Get there early as there will be big queues and they may not have what you want. Alternatively you can visit Cafe in der Vrede across the road where you can (almost always) buy the beers in six-packs or taste them in the vast cafe. You can also buy St-Sixtus pate, cheese and beer glasses as souvenirs.

Another must for beer fans is Noel Cuvelier%26#39;s beer shop off the A38 between Poperinge and the motorway from Dunkerque - look for a nondescript sign saying %26quot;beer shop%26quot; on the right as you%26#39;re coming from Poperinge, before you get to the border. Its an incredible place and sells God knows how many beers (and beer gift packs and glasses), along with cheese, chocolates and general groceries. They don%26#39;t take cards but they will take sterling or Euros.

Watou is a largish village about 20 mins drive from Poperinge and which houses the fabulous t%26#39;Hommelhof on Watouplein (http://www.hommelhof.be), an excellent restaurant specialising in beer cuisine. Wonderful food (I recommend the scampi salad with raspberry beer dressing) and the chef himself, Stefan Couttaneye, will often come out to serve it to you. There%26#39;s also the Korenbloem round the corner in Klein Markt, and the Van Eecke brewery (home of Hommelbier and the Het Kapitel range).

Then you%26#39;ve got all the various beer cafes in the Heuvelland area south of Poperinge - not visited personally but they sound great as described by the van Tromp guide and Tim Webb%26#39;s Belgian beer book - unfortunately most of them are only open weekends.

Enough of Belgium - you would be just over the border from French Flanders and they can match anything in Belgium. You can visit the shop of the St-Sylvestre brewery at St-Sylvestre-Cappel on the D916 between Hazebrouck and Cassel - the brewery is down a small road opposite the church. (I recommend the Trois Monts and the Gavroche) You could go to the tasting cafe of the Brasserie Esquelbecq a bit further north. And above all, above all you MUST visit Cassel, a beautiful Flemish village perched atop its hill nearby with lovely views all around, and which has the best French beer cafe in the world in T%26#39;Kasteelhof, which is to be found just below Cassel%26#39;s moulin (windmill). All its products are local and the beer list is to die for (and there%26#39;s even some lovely flavoured lemonades for the designated driver) and the food is great too (go for the Houtland planche - a selection of local charcuterie and cheeses). Wooden tables, an old wooden bar, loads of knick-knacks everywhere and old Flemish games like jue de grenouille and Billard St-Nicolas. There%26#39;s also a small shop where you can buy the beers, pates, cheeses etc. Sadly its only open from Thursdays-Sundays (all week bar Monday in July and August). There%26#39;s also a wonderful shop called Racine (on the corner where you turn off the main road into Cassel up to the moulin) which sells excellent local souvenirs and has a fabulous cave de bieres in its basement. Plus there%26#39;s lots of other decent cafes etc round the Grand Place (not to mention an excellent chocolate shop).

One other bar you must try and visit - Het Blauwershof at Godeswaersvelde, just over the border in France - lovely old-fashioned traditional estaminet with a good selection of beers and traditional Flemish games.

Sorry for rambling on for so long - I hope I%26#39;ve given you enough ideas for your holiday. Do try and get hold of the aforementioned van Tromp book and also Tim Webb%26#39;s Belgian beer guide and the Good Beer Guide to Northern France. It%26#39;s an absolutely lovely, peaceful part of the world and I wish I was going back there soon (but I%26#39;m going to Ghent in 3 weeks so I can%26#39;t complain!)

|||

Hello Piglet

I hope you had a good trip. ReuzeEmma was spot on with her recommendations. Cassel is a fantastic place. T%26#39;Kasteelhof is as described, and Cassel has a number of other brilliant Flemish Estaminets, including Kerelshof on the square, which serves Poperings Hommelbier on draught. The pubs are wonderful, and very friendly.

I%26#39;ve stayed at the Hotel Foch on the square several times. You can get a double room with dinner bed and breakfast for 94E.

hotel-foch2@wanadoo.fr.

I%26#39;ve also stayed at Talbot House in Poperinge. Single rooms and doubles are clean and cheap. Talbot House was the famous Toc H, rest and recreational facility for soldiers in WW1. Very atmospheric. office@talbothouse.be.

I%26#39;m off to Poperinge and Cassel with my Dad next weekend. We%26#39;re also staying 2 nights in Antwerp. Well worth a stay. The seaman%26#39;s Mission %26quot;Internationaal Zeemanshuis%26quot; is the place to stay in Antwerp. Cheap and clean, with free parking. It%26#39;s a nondescript block of flats, but OK inside, better than a lot of Travelodges at half the price. You shouldn%26#39;t miss the Bar Kulminator in Antwerp.

reservatie@zeemanshuis.be.

All the best,

Ian

Wolverhampton.

Wanted to say thanks for the Palace recommendation. Our stay in Poperinge was awesome. Beatrix was more than helpful with everything. We actually overslept and missed breakfast after a late night sampling beers, and she called our room and said she wait for us to come down. How many places would do something like that. Not too many.

Noel Cuveliers was another awesome recommendation. I got many cool points with the fellas when they say this place.

Again, thanks for everything.

For those who know this hotel I just thought you might like to know that Bea and Guy are retiring at the end of the week and have sold the business to a younger couple!

Apparently they will continue the current beer theme and festival held each October. Let%26#39;s just hope it doesn%26#39;t change too much!!!!

College Students visiting Brussels

Hello, what area would you recommend 2 college students stay?

-thanks, deb

|||

It doesn%26#39;t matter all that much, Brussels is a small city and you can get just about anywhere by public transport. The student area is in part of the commune of Ixelles, on the 71 bus route, but your first consideration is going to be where can you AFFORD to stay? I don%26#39;t know of any hotels or youth hostels near the universities, so you might want to consider somewhere like the Welcome Hotel by Ste. Catherine metro station, look under %26quot;Brussels Hotels%26quot; on the left for reviews by TA users.

|||

Can you recommend any eurostar packages for the weekend -London to Brussels, I was wondering if there was a discount package out there for 2 college students? Any company you can recommend? Thanks again, deb

|||

Sorry I live in Brussels so have no idea about package deals offered in the UK, but I presume you have looked at the Eurostar website?

eurostar.com/UK/uk/leisure/latest_deals.jsp

As these deals are likely to use rather expensive hotels, you should compare any such packages with the cost of a standard youth fare (40 GBP single, 49-59 GBP return) on the Eurostar plus cheap accommodation, e.g. in a youth hostel (google Brussels youth hostels) or cheapish hotel like the Welcome or the Derby. Although, if by any chance you are coming at the weekend, most hotels in Brussels drop their prices considerably then, so you could say somewhere like the Novotel %26quot;off Grand%26#39; Place%26quot;, right in the centre near most of the things you would want to see:

novotel.com/novotel/…fiche_hotel.shtml

Whether you were staying around the Grand%26#39; Place or at Ste. Catherine, you would be quite near the bars and cafés in St. Géry, where I understand young people hang out.

|||

Thanks, when you say single and return, what does that mean? Is %26quot;return%26quot; round trip fare, or do I have that wrong? deb

Atomium - is it worth a visit

Hi

I have seen very fixed feeling on the Atomium.

Has anyone visited this recently and would they reccommend a visit.

Are the views from the top worth the entrance fee.

Also has anyone reccomendations on things to do that are different than the usual tourist things.

What do the locals do at the weekend, where do they go?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

|||

In my opinion the best thing about the Atomium is the view of it from the outside, especially in the evening. I have been since the renovation, in fact it wasn%26#39;t quite finished at the time. The view from the top is not that wonderful and I was disappointed that the plastic windows of the viewing dome are either still scratched or have got scratched again already. However, as you say (I think) feelings are very mixed, so someone else could give you yet another conflicting opinion, you may have to make up your own mind.

What locals do in Brussels at weekends is no doubt much what people do anywhere in the Western world! They may go to the cinema on Saturday night, the Midi Market (or other local market like the one in Boitsfort) on Sunday morning and to their parents or in-laws for lunch on Sunday (a big thing here) then perhaps for a walk in the afternoon in the forest or in the grounds of the Africa Museum in Tervuren. Of course it also depends on the time of year and what the weather is doing, in the summer many people go to the coast at weekends.

One day in Brugge

Hi

I am travelling to Brussels this friday for an extended weekend and I am planning on visiting Brugge hopefully on Saturday as we would like to visit the market.

Once we arrive in Brugge how easy is it to walk from the train station into the town centre and onto the market. Or are we better off hopping on the bus?

If the bus is a better option can you anyone tell me the bus number that we should take.

Thank you in advance

I posted the question on two seperate forums to allow me to get advice from different people, there can be cases where some people only visited Brugge and then there are people who may have visited Brugge as a side trip from Brussels like I am proposing to do.

Delerium Cafe

Hi

I have seen a few mentions for Delerium Cafe on the forum can anyone give me the address of this bar even the street name would be helpful.

Thanks

|||

Impasse de la Fidelite

I found it a bit hard to find, it%26#39;s in a little alley off the rue de Bouchers area where all the restuarants are.

|||

Thanks for the info

|||

If googling, you%26#39;re probably finding it difficult to find because previous references are mis-spellt: www.deliriumcafe.be

How were they mis-spelt? I got them from that very site you reference. (Even though I know where the place is I wanted to make sure I got the spelling correct so I went to their site before I answered Breezer%26#39;s question)

Brussels Nord to Amsterdam Central - help please

I%26#39;m looking to purchase a one way ticket from Brussels Nord to Amsterdam Central on May 5th. Should I purchse a Thalys ticket for this or should I purchase intercity tickets for this. Also where should I buy my tickets at. I would appreciate any responses very much.

Thank You

|||

Unless you specifically want a Thalys departure (check timetable for all trains from Bruxelles-Nord to Amsterdam-Centraal on http://www.b-rail.be/main/E/ or, for Thalys only, www.thalys.com), there is currently no time advantage in taking a Thalys train to Amsterdam rather than InterCity, and on top of that, Thalys only leaves from Bruxelles-Midi so you would have to take a local train first. I don%26#39;t know whether you can use the Belgian Railways%26#39; online purchase system from the U.S. but in any case most people would just buy the ticket at the station prior to departure.

|||

Thank you for that. I would love to purchase tickets online if possible. If anyone knows which site allows online purchase please let me know. Thanks in advance.

|||

Have you already tried qaminari%26#39;s b-rail.be link? It is the Belgian Railway website. if you can%26#39;t buy your ticket from them, try www.nsinternationaal.nl

In any case, there is NO ADVANTAGE in buying online except that you save a few minutes at the station.

Ghent Underground Music

I am going to Ghent for three months to study in the art college. I have heard that it is good for underground music, which greatly interests me. Does anyone have any tips for locations and places to go?

|||

I%26#39;m not sure what you mean with underground music.. Do you mean techno/house or ... ?

There are a lot of great places to go out, so specify and I will gladly answer :-)

|||

I%26#39;m hoping for an indie kind of crowd. nothing to into itself though. good bands, original stuff. doesn%26#39;t have to be live music. would like to avoid house and techno, some electronic would be good though. thanks for your help!

|||

Charlatan and Kinky Star (both on the vlasmarkt) might be interesting for you.

Itenerary Opinions

Travelling to Belgium for six days late March early April. My current planned itenerary is:

Day 1 - Brussels

Day 2 - Brussels

Day 3 - Leuven

Day 4 - Brugge

Day 5 - Ghent

Day 6 - Antwerp

After reading these forums, it seems like two days in Brugge may be more enjoyable than two days in Brussels. Can anyone comment on that thought?

Also, I%26#39;m considering not seeing Antwerp and going to Paris instead. I was looking forward to Antwerp, but I%26#39;m trying to get in as much of the area as possible in a short amount of time.

Many thanks for any comments, suggestions, or ideas you might have.

|||

It would be easier to go to Paris from Brussels, so if you are looking to cut down your stay in Brussels, why not do Paris on day 2 (1h20 minutes by Thalys from Gare du Midi)? If you stay in Brussels for the first 3 days and in Brugge for the next 3, you could visit Ghent and, if you decide on it, Antwerp, from there; or if you feel you haven%26#39;t had enough of Brugge, spend your last day there instead.

|||

Thanks for your reply. We are actually staying in Brussels each night, and going out to each place each morning.

purchase eurorail pass in india

Hi,

Please advise we can buy the eurorail pass in india for travel between paris to brussels and return.

What is the procedure regarding the purchase if possible?

How do we get the cheapest rates for the ticket?

How fast do we get the confirmation regarding the ticket?

Regards

|||

Do you really want to buy a rail pass only for the trip from Paris to Brussels? Or are you going to travel extensively around Europe within short time?

|||

There is a website (American, I think) called www.eurorail.com which sells tickets on trains run by European national train companies and eurail passes for travel inside one or more countries. But if you are only going from Paris to Brussels, you don%26#39;t need a eurail pass, just a return ticket on Thalys. I think you should be able to buy the ticket from www.thalys.com and pick it up at the station in Paris (Gare du Nord). You have to book in advance to get the cheapest tickets as there are only a certain number per train and they can sell out quite fast for certain dates.

If for some reason you can%26#39;t buy the ticket on the Thalys website, try the French Railways one, www.voyages-sncf.com/dynamic/_SvHomePage…

(it is also possible the SNCF has an office in India, I don%26#39;t know).

Stanhope & Restaurants

Hi,

I am coming to Brussels and have been told the Stanhope is excellent - any comments?

I would like recommendations on where to eat locally not too expensive (mid range if poss, I spent out on the hotel).

Can anyone help?

|||

The Stanhope is near Trône metro station, which is at one end of rue du Luxembourg (an office area), at the other end you have the Place du Luxembourg with loads of cafés and restaurants at all price ranges, including an Irish pub and an American-style sports bar. My favourite in the area is the (Italian) Pasticcio in rue Marie de Bourgogne - when walking towards the European Parliament (%26quot;juke box%26quot; looking building) turn right after the Léopold hotel; it%26#39;s not open every evening, though. The Leopold itself has quite a nice restaurant in a covered courtyard, though I have only eaten lunch there; on the other hand its fancy restaurant, Les Anges, is expensive.

You can also ask directions to the Place St. Boniface, a 10-minute-or-so walk away on the way to ch. d%26#39;Ixelles. There you will find another cluster of restaurants including a nice Thai one, the IIème (Deuxième) Elément.

|||

are reservations generally required for restaurants?

I am told that smoking in restaurants is common place, is this correct? if so are there any good non-smoking restaurants

|||

Smoking in restaurants has been banned here since 1/1/2007. The rule does not, however, apply to bars.

If you go to the sort of areas I mentioned, there are so many restaurants that you shouldn%26#39;t need to reserve, but of course they quite like it if you do. You would have to reserve for places like Comme Chez Soi months in advance, but you won%26#39;t be going there if you are trying to save money. You can look up all restaurants in Belgium on www.resto.be, the area you will be in is - just - Ixelles (1050). The town centre is 1000.

airport distances to SPA

I am going to the grand prix in spa in september 2007 and I am flying in from dublin to charleroi. I am renting a car and driving to the circiut. How long does it take to drive from charleroi airport to Spa? what is the distance in miles or kilometers ? And can anyone help me with names of guesthouses nearby or towns to look for accomodation in...thanks

|||

65 miles, 104 km, for hotels see %26quot;Spa Hotels%26quot; in the list on the left, or look at http://www.booking.com/city/be/Spa.html?aid=303948;label=Spa-0GuhS_D9dVOoelewCuWhWAS681892641;ws=%26amp;gclid=CNKt0vjfh4oCFTRtMAodU0BDfQ

|||

Thanks, so is that 65 miles from charleoi to spa?

|||

It%26#39;s the answer to the only question you asked which required an answer in miles or kilometers, i.e. distance from Charleroi Airport (which is in Gosselies) to Spa.

|||

ok, I was just double checking! Thank you for such wonderful help with this matter, you are so nice

CDG to brussels return lowest ticket

Hi All, I need help in train booking. I have to travel 26th feb 07 morning 8 am from paris CDG to brussels airport. Kindly advice for the cheapest rate option by train. How can i do these booking online and how can i get the tickets ? Info on smilys ? is it only for weekend travel ? or any other limitation ? I have 4 weeks time now, so where can i get the advance booking advantage ? Vivek

|||

www.thalys.com - all conditions for smilys etc. are on there, but while it is not restricted to weekends, it IS available only for RETURN (round-trip) tickets and it isn%26#39;t clear whether you would be returning to CDG from Brussels.

You could also try www.voyages-sncf.com/dynamic/_SvHomePage…

|||

Hi, thanks for reply. I am in India. I want a return ticket from brussels to Paris CDG on 2nd march 07 evening 1800 hrs. But is this an e ticket or printable ticket which i can print in India and can travel. I had this querry beacuse the site asks for place where you want ticket to be delivered.

|||

I can%26#39;t tell you as I live in Belgium where I have the option of printing the ticket. If it doesn%26#39;t give you this option or the option of sending it to India, I believe you can ask for the ticket to be delivered in France and pick it up at the station at CDG.

Incidentally, the Thalys stops at Brussels%26#39; Gare du Midi, where you will have to change to a local train to Brussels Airport. You can check the timetable on http://www.b-rail.be/main/E/ entering Bruxelles-Midi as departure station and Zaventem (Airport) as destination, there is one almost every 10 minutes, e.g. at 57 minutes past each hour. Cost was €2.80 single last time I used it.

Luxembourg day trip

Hi

We are travelling to Brussels very early tomorrow morning, we should be in the city centre by 10.30 so this really is a last minutet question.

Someone has suggested we take a day trip to Luxembourg during our stay in Brussels. We are already planning a day trip to Brugge.

Does anyone have any opinion if its worth going to Luxembourg just for a day trip?

Or let us know what Luxembourg town is like?

Thanks

|||

Personally I don%26#39;t think it is worth it, it takes 3 hours to get there by train, which is longer than I like for a day trip, and while I really don%26#39;t like Luxembourg Ville at all, if it has any charms (view from the casemates, or defences) it would be in good weather only. At the moment it is cold here in Brussels and the forecast for this weekend is for fog see www.bbc.co.uk/weather/5day.shtml?world=0037 (change for Luxembourg to see weather there but I don%26#39;t think it is usually very different from here).

I don%26#39;t know how to explain what Luxembourg is like, I would suggest you look up the Luxembourg forum and check %26quot;Luxembourg attractions%26quot; in the list on the left-hand side of the page.

If you want to go, convenient trains might be dep. Bruxelles-Nord 08:45, arr. Luxembourg-Ville 11:36 and return dep. 20:24 arr. 23:15 (last train to arrive on the same day). There is at least one train an hour if not more, and you trains travel through 5 Brussels stations on their way out - Gare du Midi, Gare Centrale, Gare du Nord, Schuman and, not surprisingly, Gare de Luxembourg.

|||

Thanks for that. To be honest I%26#39;m not that interested in going myself I tend to prefer to spend time in the country I am visiting rather than other towns and cities around it.

Things for kids

We are going to see a ten year old in Brussels on the 10th to the 11th Feb. Is there any festivals or events running that weekend that would be suitable for a child. Is there any web sites that can help with this sort info.

Any help would be great!

|||

The only think I know of that%26#39;s on that weekend is the Holiday Show at the Heysel, where the stands from different countries often offer displays of dancing or whatever; which might appeal to a child although I don%26#39;t like the crowds, myself. It costs €8 to get in, but local publications often offer vouchers and you can order up to 2 free tickets on here if you can a) manage in French and b) give an address in Brussels for delivery: www.vosvacances.be/BEFR/site/freeticket.aspx

You can also buy Brussels%26#39; weekly news magazine, The Bulletin, on arrival - it comes out on Thursdays - and look in the What%26#39;s On section for children%26#39;s activities.

In my experience kids are not that interested in the Comic Book Museum but they do like the Natural History Museum, have a look at http://www.naturalsciences.be/index_html, and Scientastic, http://www.scientastic.com/EN/IntroE.htm.

One thing NOT to do at the moment is to visit the Children%26#39;s Museum in Ixelles, at least without checking beforehand. In the high winds a couple of weeks ago a neighbouring chimney gave way and smashed through its roof.

Mind you I think if I were a 10-year old I might just prefer to be taken to the cinema or skating or something. The (small) ice-skating rink at the Conrad Hotel is apparently there until 14 Feb and otherwise there%26#39;s a covered one next to the Poseidon swimming pool by Tomberg metro station.

things to do in charleroi

we will be in belgium for a business meeting at the end of february. our flight is not leaving until after 8 so we will have approx 4-5 hours to kill in the charleroi area and don%26#39;t really fancy spending it at airport. any ideas fellow advisors???

also would like to grab an early dinner - is there anywhere fabulous nearby???

|||

You are in the wrong forum, but having looked at the Charleroi forum (tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g188646-i2997-Char…) I can see why! Unlike other forums, the Charleroi one doesn%26#39;t list %26quot;Charleroi attractions%26quot;, presumably because no TA members have ever recommended any.

The words %26quot;fabulous%26quot; and Charleroi, which is a depressed industrial city, don%26#39;t generally go together although it does have a good glass museum and a photography museum. These and more are listed on here charleroi.be/SiteResources/…

%26amp;DocID=3173%26amp;v1ID=%26amp;RevID=%26amp;level1=3173%26amp;level2=0%26amp;level3=0%26amp;level4=0%26amp;listerep=

Charleroi Airport is in the suburb of Gosselies, a 10-minute bus ride from Charleroi%26#39;s Gare du Sud. If your flight is leaving after 20.00 I think you might have to eat at the airport as you will want to start queuing up for check in around 18.00 and restaurants don%26#39;t tend to open for dinner before 19.00. I am sure there must be a taverne or something somewhere in the neighbourhood, serving things like omelette and chips all day long, but unfortunately don%26#39;t know where. If you are staying in Charleroi in previous days, presumably you can find out then. Anyway, the airport has a canteen-like restaurant that serves quite decent canteen-like food, I had an excellent home-made soup there the only time I flew out of Charleroi. (Or rather, the only time I TRIED to fly out of Charleroi, the Ryanair flight was cancelled owing to fog and Charleroi Airport won%26#39;t have the necessary equipment to handle low visibility until the Spring of 2008!)

Thalys in advance from Brussels to Paris

Hello all TAs:

I am going to stay in Brussels for two nights and then will take Thalys train to Paris on Monday. Do I have to buy a ticket in advance as it will be much cheaper than purchase it at Midi station? The cheapest will br 78 euros. Does it sound a reasonable price?

Thank you for the help!

Cherry

|||

You HAVE to buy a ticket in advance for high-speed trains, and the further in advance you can buy it, the cheaper the price. If you leave it till a couple of hours beforehand, which is the latest you can book (Thalys is reservation only), you risk not getting a place or having to pay double the price. You don%26#39;t have to buy it from Midi Station, though, you can buy any international train ticket from any international station in Brussels (which includes Midi, Central, Nord, Schuman and Luxembourg) as well as from the SNCF office in Galerie Louise and from www.thalys.com.

|||

You can book Thalys online and collect the ticket from the machines at Midi station.

|||

Thanks for all your help. I just got my Thalys ticket from STA agent today cost 30 pounds.
