I%26#39;m in Brussels for a long weekend with my girlfriend and would like to visit two top quality restaurants where I don%26#39;t have to wear a tie?
|||
Maybe I%26#39;ve never visited a top quality restaurant in my 25 years here (I don%26#39;t tend to go to the ones in hotels and have never been to anything Michelin-starred), but I can%26#39;t think of a single restaurant in Brussels that has this requirement. As there are dozens of restaurant recommendations in previous questions, I suggest you look at those and see if anything appeals.

Comme Chez Soi requires customers to were a jacket and tie.
Any other restaurants with old fashioned dress codes?

Comme Chez Soi is Michelin-starred, which is why I specified that I had not visited this type of restaurant, and the same goes for the Villa Lorraine and L%26#39;Ecailler du Palais Royal - so if that%26#39;s your definition of %26quot;top quality%26quot; you may have trouble as the jacket and tie requirement seems to be standard for that type of restaurant. Ebru also notes this requirement at La Maison du Cygne - but not the hotel restaurants I was thinking of, e.g. Alban Chambon at the Métropole and La Maison du Boeuf at the Hilton (the latter has just lost its only Michelin star, if this is of interest to you).
I would suggest you select on the basis of type of cuisine and cost from ebru http://www.ebru.be/Restaurants/RestPage.html (or www.resto.be) or follow recommendations given in this forum e.g. L%26#39;Ogenblik, Belga Queen, Cospaia.

You can dine at the Truffe Noir without a tie though the environment is so nice, a tie would suit the occasion.

My husband and I ate at L%26#39;Ecailler Du Palais Royal on Saturday night, the food is amazingly good (my main of roasted monkfish in Langoustine broth goes down as one of the best things I have ever eaten), the atmosphere really warm with a good mix of regulars and visitors alike, and men don%26#39;t need to wear a jacket and tie.
We had checked with our hotel concierge who made the reservation for us, and we were pleased to see that we weren%26#39;t the only ones there who were in a more smart casual dress-code. If they are fully booked then you may be offered a seat at the bar (we only booked on the day itself) which is perfectly comfortable and allows you to be nosy, so don%26#39;t dismiss it out of hand, though I am sure that as you are so far in advance you should be OK for a table.
I can%26#39;t compare it to anything else at the top end in Brussels as we just took a chance on a seafood brasserie the previous night, which was also great, over in Ste Catherine. You may want to think about whether 2 serious restauants is such a great idea for 2 consecutive days as I defintiely wouldn%26#39;t have been able to do it justice on the sunday night having eaten so well on the saturday!

I just looked at the %26quot;L%26#39;Ecailler Du Palais Royal%26quot; on line and it looks very nice. The only problem for me is that I can%26#39;t read the menu. Did they have any menus in english or are you just good at speaking French?
Is it located in Central Brussels (close to the Le Meridien Hotel)?
From what i could see on the menu, it looks like dinner would cost between 150 and 200 euros for 2 (give or take). Is that accurate?

I would say that my french is passable (I did leave school with an A Level in it but that was 14 years ago!). They did only give us french menus but the manager and most of the waiters spoke excellent english and were able to explain anything that we had a problem with. Do not let that put you off.
Our bill came to about 230 euros which included 2 aperatifs (the house speciality - a sparkling wine, orange zest and strawberry liquer concoction which was not as sweet as it sounds and I could have guzzled all night), 2 starters, 2 mains, 2 desserts, 2 coffees, nice bottle of sancerre and a bottle of water. To be honest we shouldn%26#39;t have had the desserts as we were really full, pure greed on our part.
It is situated in Sablon (where all the posh chocolate shops are), right on the square, so would be no more than a 15 minute walk from your hotel, I was quite surpised by how small the centre of Brussels was and we walked everywhere for the whole of our weekend.
