My gf and I are planning on coming to Brussels from London on August 4 and staying for 5 nights. Since we wanted to fly out of Brussels to get to Geneva later, we plan to be based in Brussels. Would it be a good plan to see Brussels for two whole days, then go to Brugges for a day, and Antwerp for a day. We would have one day left. Is it a good idea to do this? are the train fares expensive to Brugges and Antwerp. Can anybdoy recommend a better itenarary. I have never been to Europe so I%26#39;m not sure what how to plan out the trip. I found a nice hostel in Brussels that isnt too expensive adn thats why I wanted to stay there. I thought it would be too expensive to stay somehwere else and then have to come back to the Brussels airport.

Two days in Brussels is more than enough. The main area of Brussels that you%26#39;d want to see (historic center) is quite small. Even a day might be enough. Brussels is a very quaint city. Take the time to sit down and have one of their wonderful beers. Grab a waffle from one of the many shops offering them and then take a wander down the small laneways.
From my experience I would recommend to stay at one of the business hotels. These hotels cater to businessmen and they%26#39;re empty during August as the locals are also away on vacation. Unfortunately I can%26#39;t remember which hotel I stayed at but I do know that I was absolutely amazed at the size of our suite. We had a huge king sized bed and the room was extremely spacious with a marble bathroom and I think it cost us something like $100 a day. When you%26#39;re looking at travel websites for Brussels, take a look at the hotels that are in the business area or cater to businessmen. There%26#39;s usually an indication of this in their description.
Hope this helps!

If you go to the individual forums for each city you will find on the left a list entitled %26quot;Brussels Attractions%26quot;, %26quot;Brugge Attractions%26quot;, etc. from which you can see what appeals to you in a specific place, which is the only basis for determining how long it is worth it for you personally to stay anywhere. Your tastes may be different from those of someone who only wanted to see the obvious sights in the centre of Brussels; if you wanted to visit e.g. the Horta Museum, the Chinese Pavilion/Japanese Tower, or the Africa Museum, all of these are out in different suburbs and would take more time to cover. Bear in mind that most museums are closed on Mondays, and shops on Sundays, but if you are spending your Sunday in Brussels, the Sablon and Marolles (rue Haute, rue Blaes) areas remain lively, with the antiques market and art etc. shops.
If you have a day spare I would recommend you spend it in Ghent; you will go through it on the way to Brugge but I really would not advise you to try to do both in one day - in Ghent you have to take a tram to the centre so you need time (but, if you do decide to combine these two, don%26#39;t make the mistake of just getting off the train with a Brussels-Brugge ticket, you must ask for the ticket to be %26quot;via Ghent%26quot; when you buy it, or you would have to pay again for the second journey). You could also consider Leuven although the students who make it lively won%26#39;t be there in August.
Cost of return train fares from Brussels:
Brugge: €24 on weekdays, €12.80 on weekends.
Antwerp: €12.20 on weekdays, €6.80 on weekends
Ghent: €15 on weekdays, €8.20 on weekends
Leuven: €8.80 on weekdays, €5.20 on weekends.
