Restaurants in Brugge

Hi. I just wanted to know about dining out in Brugge. Will be there for a day. Looking for great eateries that are not expensive for lunch and dinner.

Thanks!

I was in Brugge last September, the food in this city is very good and not too bad price wise. Just walk around and look at the menus and see what you like. The restaurants in the main square tend to be a little more expensive then the ones throughout the town, but still not bad prices and the food and views are awesome.

I would suggest trying some of the hotel restaurants as well as we had some very nice meals in them.

Don%26#39;t forget to have the Fries from the two stands at the base of the Tower in the main square!

The mussels are also very good from various places throughout town.

There is a lovely bakery/cafe called Le Pain Quotidien /Het Dagelijkse Brood (The Daily Bread) in Brugges. It is part of a chain, but feels like a family owned cafe. They have open faced sandwiches, quiches, and salads. Their soups are also quite good.

I do not think that they are open for dinner. The seating is communal, which is quite fun, actually.

The address is:

Philipstockstraat 21,

8000 Brugge

050.33.60.50

Their website is www.lepainquotieien.com

For lunch try Forestière in Academiestraat and %26#39;t Zonneke at Genthof.

For Diner try St Joris on Market Square. They have a bio farm and meat is wonderfull, hand cut fries! They also have a port business so a glass of old port wine is a must there.

Also for diner : Oud Handbogenhof at Baliestraat, an old inn with open fire, nice things from grill. Garden in the summer.

Having just returned from Bruges i am amazed at the list of restaurants posted on this forum. I think someone copied the Belgian yellow pages as the meals my wife and i had there were at best mediocre.

Rough guide compares Belgian food with French. yeah right!

The food served in bruges is generally tourist trash that is hugely overpriced.

£60-70 is no guarantee of an edible meal. yes there are restaurants in the region of £120 + but they should be good for that price.

Having eaten in some of the best restaurants in the world, i can easily cross Bruges off my list. Don%26#39;t waste your money and go for the cheapest food that the locals cant ruin.

I must just mention one particular restaurant %26#39;t Schrijverke nr the cathedral on Gruuthusestraat 4 8000. This place should be closed down.

Ok it looks the part from the outside and inside. However the food for the price is scandalous. Mixed grill came with overcooked beef %26amp; lamb %26amp; raw chicken. salad was bordering on rotten in places.

staff seemed immune to the problems, despite other diners also suffering. They just advised to return the food to the chef %26amp; he would cook the chicken longer.

The final straw was having the bill thrown at me. This chef deserves to be locked up. If he needs me to tell him not to serve chicken raw then forget it i%26#39;ll do it myself. This is not a one off be warned protect your wallet %26amp; stomach!

I disagree with ropley, we just got back from Brugge and loved it! I saw your post also about brussels and if it%26#39;s not too late for your group, I%26#39;d recommend spending less time in Brussels and more time in Brugge. Brussels was dirty, we ate terribly (except an irish pub which thankfully we found) and we wern%26#39;t impressed with the %26#39;sites%26#39;. We thought of it as the EU capital, big city with perhaps a palace, etc. Sorely disappointed in what we could do and see. Take a bus tour and be done with Brussels in a day.

But back to your question, I%26#39;ll give you one VERY good place to go for lunch as it%26#39;s my %26#39;must%26#39; for Brugge:

Terrastje cafe/bistro- Genthof 45 (phone: 050/33 09 19)

Super nice owners, delicious food, and a great little find tucked onto a street corner. Across the street is the Hotel Adornes (if it%26#39;s not too late for this either, we recommend staying there! it%26#39;s awesome!).

|||

We go to Brugge regularly and always have at least one meal at Arthie%26#39;s on Wollestraat. It is not the cheapest, but the food is always excellent. The owners are friendly and helpful and we always have a good time. They are moving across the road to larger premises.
