I have five days to spend (not including overnight fligth from JFK) and am wondering is this enough time in Brussels. Also with this time constraint is it worth going to Amsterdam for 1 or two nights and flying home from there? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Five days are enough to see Brussels, probably four are enough, too. We stayed at Brussels five days and we spent one day to a trip to Paris.
Amsterdam is 3 hours away from Brussels by Thalys train. Keep in mind that you have to book earlier through the site thalys.com. I don%26#39;t know if it worth staying there or return to Brussels. It depends on you. However you could return to Brussels and visit Bruge for a day. This place is fantastic.
Have a really nice time there.

It depends on what you want to do: some people could see all they want of Brussels (Grand%26#39; Place..) in half a day, others might want to visit several museums, do the rounds of beer cafés and/or take a day trip to Brugge while here, for example. I don%26#39;t really see any alternative to your working it out for yourself, perhaps using the list of %26quot;Brussels Attractions%26quot; on the left.
If you can fly home as easily from Amsterdam Schiphol as from Brussels Airport, it takes 3 hours on the train from here. Taking the InterCity train (from Bruxelles-Central, at 44 minutes past each hour, e.g. dep. 09:44, arr. Amsterdam-Schiphol 12:21, Amsterdam-Centraal 12:38), you would just buy the ticket on the day anyway, so apart from having to decide what to do about your hotel here and possibly reserving one in Amsterdam, you don%26#39;t necessarily need to decide in advance but could wait and see when you have had enough of Brussels. Again, whether going to Amsterdam would be worth it for 1 or 2 nights depends on what you want to see and do there - if all you want is to look at it from the station and/or maybe take a canal boat trip, 1 night would be more than adequate, for the rest why not look in the Amsterdam forum, I%26#39;m sure this sort of question must have come up there in the past.

P.S. Having just seen the first response, I must disagree with regard to Thalys. Between Brussels and Paris you would have no choice but to take this high-speed train, and on that line it really is a high-speed train, taking half the time (1h21) to cover the same distance as between Brussels and Amsterdam (3h). However between here and Amsterdam, the high-speed track is not yet in operation - it is due to be finished sometime this year, but I heard possibly not before November! Therefore in that direction, Thalys is no faster than InterCity, it is usually more expensive (price depends on date of travel and how far in advance you book), you have to have a seat reservation and therefore must book in advance, rather than turning up and buying a ticket for the next train as with InterCity, and Thalys trains only leave from Gare du Midi whereas InterCity trains stop at Gare du Midi, Gare centrale and Gare du Nord.
