Mexican Restaurant near Grande Place

Hi

a group of ten people including myslef and my husband will be travelling to Brussels on April 13th for the weekend. Were looking for a really nice restuarant (around €30-€40 per person).i know i love Mexican and am sure the rest would , would anyone be able to point me in the right direction? also if any of you have any other restauants you reccommend i would really appreciate this, were not big fish eaters but apart from that we%26#39;d try anything ;-)

were staying in the Metropole Hotel.

Thanks

Aisling

Hi,

There is a Mexican restaurant off Anspachlaan (which is the closest to the Grand Place) called Chi-Chis. It is TERRIBLE, not even close to the US Chi Chis which in itself is only OK.

A little further (about 3 miles from the Grand Place) is a decent Mexican restaurant called Pablos on Rue de Namur 51. It is closed on Sunday afternoons. Pablos could take a group of your size but you will need to reserve in advance Tel 02 512 4135. They have a website www.pablos.be

Have fun!

I%26#39;m intrigued as to why anyone would travel from Ireland to Brussels for a weekend and want to eat in a Mexican restaurant - it makes as much sense as going to a Belgian restaurant in Mexico! Among the various ethnic cuisines available here, Mexican (or more commonly Tex-Mex) is definitely not what Brussels does best, there are hardly any Mexicans living in Brussels whereas there are plenty of Moroccans, Italians, Spaniards, etc., which means restaurants for these cuisines are of a much higher standard than you can expect of places like Chi-Chi%26#39;s.

As regards other restaurants, there are already plenty of recommendations in response to previous questions in the Brussels forum. Among those serving [French/]Belgian food, L%26#39;Ogenblik will not be big enough for you (and in any case a friend recently told me standards have slipped there) and Aux Pavés de Bruxelles could be a tight squeeze unless they have an upstairs room; but La Taverne du Passage is, and it%26#39;s also in the Galeries St. Hubert between the Grand%26#39; Place and the street going down to Place de la Monnaie, which is itself a stone%26#39;s throw from Place de Brouckère where the Métropole is.

For a group of 10 you will either need to book in advance or get in early, i.e. by 19.00, you can find contact details for all restaurants mentioned on www.resto.be, which you can consult in English - and if you put 1000 in the zip code box on that site, you will find all restaurants in the city centre. The usual warnings apply as regards those in the Ilôt Sacré (rue des Bouchers, petite rue des Bouchers...), with the usual exceptions.

gamanari

your very easily intrigued ! ! ! ;-)

you will notice i stated that Mexican was my choice, i dont see the point in going away on holidays searching for restaurants that serve cuisine that i dont even like, it mistifies me why people actually would.

thank you very much for your advise, i will take on board - good to know we will have to book in advance.

Cheers ! or Adios ;-) ! ! !!!!

Gaminari, stop being so grumpy. Isn%26#39;t that what Brussels is all about....multiculturalism?? There is a lot more to Belgian culture than just its cuisine. Have a great time Aisling and enjoy your Mexican restaurant!

|||

I%26#39;m originally from Texas and have to agree that Chi-chi%26#39;s leaves a lot to be desired on the Mexican food front. I did enjoy the large sombrero they placed on hubby%26#39;s head when I told them it was his birthday. Was intrigued that they placed the nacho chip *straw* basket directly over the heating candle. If I remember correctly, the vegetables for my fajitas were raw not cooked.

So - a bit fun but not a repeatable event.

Aisling, yes I am indeed easily intrigued, including, now, by Arracka%26#39;s suggestion that multiculturalism is %26quot;what Brussels is all about%26quot;. If that is supposed to be a reference to the EU, that is very far from being what Brussels is %26quot;all about%26quot;, but even if it was, I fail to see how this would extend to Mexico!

Anyway the main point I was trying to make was that Mexican restaurants in Brussels - though not ALL ethnic cuisines represented here - are mediocre, so for someone who likes Mexican cuisine, this is not the best destination for it, and for someone who hasn%26#39;t tried it yet (as would appear to be the case among members of the group), what is available here will not be the best introduction to it. Any more than I imagine Mexico would have any good Belgian restaurants.

Apart from that, I was trying to give a helpful reply to the rest of the question (to which Arracka apparently has nothing to contribute apart from his/her words to me) , but don%26#39;t worry, I won%26#39;t bother in future.

Dear Aisling81,

I%26#39;m impressed about this forum actually all the previous advice is correct and I strongly agree with everything said.

1. Stay away from Chi-chis

2. Mexican food is not well represented in Brussels, contrary to Marrocan, Thai.....almost any restaurant you choose is very likely food will be good.

3. If you stick to Tex-Mex Pablos is a good option, food is good, ambience nice, and go for a pitcher of frozen margaritas %26amp; nachos especial to start with.

4.If you want something different and your group likes to try different things, go to resto.bar I strongly recommend it, food is great (fusion), concept is new, see more at: http://www.restopointbar.be and if you go there you can have a drink before at www.theflat.be

5. You will find exactly what you are looking for at resto.be is available in EN and user friendly.

6. Brussels is a nice city with a great choice of restaurants, as I always said to my visitors name a kind of food and you will find it here, quality is normaly very high. I%26#39;ve be living here 4 years I often go out for dinner and I have been rarely dissapointed. Im sure you will have a good time, just avoid the Grand place restaurants, move a few blocks from there, Place Saint Gery, Place Chatelain, Place Saint Boniface are good options.

7. Don%26#39;t forget to book in advance.

8. Enjoy!
